Core Responsibilities

• Selected candidates must be able to work various shifts, rotating shifts, weekends, and/or holidays as required.
• They will perform mandated inspection programs and respond to emergency calls.
• The nature of this job requires selected candidates to assist in the maintenance and repair of the gas distribution system in a safe and efficient manner.
• The candidate must have the ability to read and interpret maps and drawings of the gas and electric infrastructure.
• The candidate must be able to read and follow applicable specifications pertaining to each job function.
• Candidates will be expected to work safely and are required to communicate clearly with their coworkers and customers.
• Selected candidates will be required to access/enter customer premises and have customer contact on a regular basis.
• The candidates will be expected to provide outstanding customer service and present a positive image of the company to customers.
• If you accept a job offer in association with this posting, you will be assigned to any of the operating areas of Gas Operations (Westchester, Queens, Manhattan, or Bronx).
• If you accept the position of Mechanic B you are expected to progress to the title of Mechanic A and be fully operator qualified within 18 months of accepting the position.

Required Education/Experience

• High School Diploma/GED

Relevant Work Experience

• The position is covered under US Department of Transportation (DOT) and therefore successful candidates will be required to undergo random drug tests, which will include marijuana. You may also be randomly be tested for drugs at any time during your employment with ConEdison, including for marijuana.
• The selected candidate for this position must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
• There is extensive contact with customers, the general public, and municipal agencies and the candidate must be able to effectively deal with them.
• Requirements for this position include 3 years of Plumbing and/or HVAC experience or 5 years of related industry experience or background involving building trades or mechanical skill sets.
• Applicants with 3 years of gas operations experience will be given preference.
• A strong knowledge of the use and operation of hand tools is required.
• The candidate must have the ability to read and interpret maps and drawings of the gas and electric infrastructure.
• The candidate must be able to read and follow applicable specifications pertaining to each job function.
• Knowledge and use of a computer is required for this position.
• Must be able to work alone under minimal supervision.
• The candidate who obtains this position must qualify and advance through career path training to Mechanic A and must be fully operator qualified in this title within eighteen months from acceptance of this position.

Physical Demands

• Must respond to system emergencies
• Must work at field locations in all weather conditions
• Must perform extended driving through heavy traffic and severe off-road conditions
• Must perform heavy manual labor; i.e. pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 50 pounds
• Must carry tools and materials, climb ladders and scaffolds, and enter confined spaces
• Must work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
• Must work with and in the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
• Must be approved and able to wear either a full- or half-face respirator without facial hair or other condition that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations.
• Must walk, stand, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach
• Must use hand tools and operate heavy equipment,i.e. jackhammers
• Must wear all necessary personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including; fire retardant clothing and safety harness
• Must work with equipment with manufacturer weight rating of 350 llbs.
• Must be able to use equipment with a maximum weight rating of 375 lbs when wearing and/or carrying 25lbs of clothing and equipment.
